Perceiving a higher dimension may mess up our perception of things even more than this though. I think I'd probably have a hard time navigating a 4D space because it'd probably look like a bunch of ridiculous patterns unless I had enough time that my brain could adapt to figuring out how to get around, kind of like a newborn before she or he knows how to interpret the reality around it. This would be even more true of 5D, and 6D and higher would probably be too much for most people to handle, especially because our eyes are only able to see reality in mostly 2D and a little bit in 3D. Like in the story though, other senses like sound might be more helpful, maybe, although on the other hand listening to higher-dimensional sound might seriously screw up ones ears, like what happened to the protagonist in 'Dreams in the Witch-House'.
